OctPoWriMo Day 2 prompt: Where does poetry hide?

Where Does Poetry Hide?

Poetry gathers dust in the corner
It peers up through stains on the floor
Thriving in haphazard textures
It’s all this and so much more

Poetry lives in all we rush past
Undervalued, overlooked, swept aside
I found one once tucked in a napkin
Shivering and trembling inside

It’s what our mind crops out of the picture
It’s at the heart of many mistakes
All it wants is to be acknowledged
If ignored it will make your heart ache

31 Days: Today’s photos

Today’s photos are ones I snapped while working at my husband’s boat repair shop. It’s a busy place, and often when I hand him the phone, I’m distracted by the accidental beauty surrounding me. When this happens, I take a moment to zero in on what I’ve found and take a picture of it (if possible) with my iPhone.

About OctPoWriMo, Blogtoberfest & 31 Days

I’m posting each day in October as part of the following blogging challenges:

OctPoWriMo

OctPoWriMo, which encourages folks to write 31 poems in 31 days, as well as read and comment on other participants poems. You can write poems in any style and any subject, plus there are daily prompts to nudge you along, too.

Blogtoberfest

Blogtoberfest simply challenges folks to blog each day this month, and to visit and comment on other participant’s blogs.

31 Days

Like the aforementioned blogging challenges, 31 Days challenges folks to blog each day this month, and to visit and comment on other participant’s blogs. The main difference with this challenge is that each blogger is allowed to choose a theme for their month. I have chosen 31 Days of Poems & Soulful Photos, by which I mean that each day I will share not only poetry, but also photos I have taken with my iPhone that strike a chord with me.

  1. I really enjoyed your poem. I’ve never written a poem so my hide I guess in my head, lol. Never had the gift of prose, but do enjoy reading it.

  2. There is so much ripe and rich honesty here. There are many times when I have “missed” poetry in the corners or literally set aside my poetry and later couldn’t find it. Great piece, Tui.

  3. this is so lovely..I really like the line”I found one once tucked in a napkin
    Shivering and trembling inside”

  4. Your photographs are stunning and make me wish for an iPhone. And the photos perfectly complement your poem. My favorite line? I can’t decide between the poem hidden in the napkin all trembly or that last line that says if poetry is ignored it will make your heart ache. Ah, yes!

  5. Amy Amy

I love, love, LOVE the second stanza! In a napkin… who knew? :)

  6. I really like the napkin imagery! That was so playful; I could practically see it squirming to get out. Your literal/non literal take on the prompt was so creative. (Does that make sense? I often don’t make sense. lol)

  7. I am so happy that you have joined us for this poetry journey! I love this poem and the photo fits so perfectly! And I love the last line, “if ignored it will make your heartache.”

  8. I adore this! It is so perfect–poetry really does hide in all those places we ignore. Bravo!
