Fresh Donuts, with a Side of Misogyny

Bite Size Memoir: First Jobs Although I can laugh about it now, it is with slight trepidation that I reveal my response to Lisa Reiter’s Bite Size Memoir Prompt for this week. For years, I was so ashamed of this incident. After all, I didn’t just get fired from my first job, I also got arrested for the first (and only!) time: 1. I remember the smell of fresh donuts, and wearing shirts with sleeves I could roll down when bagging fresh-baked French bread, which would scratch up my arms, otherwise. 2. I remember my boss wearing a suit and…

Memoir Mondays & a Blog Hop for Non-Fiction

This Week’s #BiteSizeMemoir Prompt: Camping THE PLAN: I intended to spend the week reading books, swimming, stargazing, and sailing our little 12 foot boat. My sister had a tan to perfect, and fish to catch. My parents, I’m sure, simply wanted to relax. THE DISASTER: The August sun held out until we reached the lakeside campground. First came the splats of big fat drops. This crescendoed to a steady downpour as we frantically pitched our tent. THE REALITY: No swimming, fishing, sailing, or tanning. Instead, we told stories and read books. We played card games and Scrabble. Mom won the…

Bite Size Memoir: Fairies & Magic

What is Bite Size Memoir? Bite Size Memoir is a new writing project created by Lisa Reiter. Here’s how she describes it: Bite size memoir is designed to help anyone record some personal memoir in small manageable bites. There’s a prompt every week and some constraints to keep it small… Feel free to dip in and out each week without commitment. Participants are given a prompt each week, then asked to respond with either a 150 word prose/poem, or 10 statements starting with “I remember” that are triggered by the prompt. I chose the prose route this week. While Lisa’s…

Texas Graveyards: Smoke Rise Farm Pet Cemetery in Azle

Texas is full of historic graveyards and I love exploring them. I rarely visit modern cemeteries, unless there is someone famous buried there or a particularly unique headstone to check out. For the most part, newer graveyards lack the history, the beautiful old trees, and the finely crafted headstones and monuments of the older ones. Yesterday, however, I checked out a graveyard that has only been around since 1982. What made me curious about Smoke Rise Farm (11330 Mountain View Drive, Azle, Texas 76020) is that it’s a pet cemetery. I’d never seen an official animal graveyard before, so I…

Row80 & a Ren Fair Redux

Ren Fair Redux As I mentioned in My Big Fat Ren Fair Wedding I got married last year at a Renaissance festival down in Waxahachie, Texas. This made planning this year’s anniversary celebration pretty easy; the festival gives us a built-in party to attend each year. I also thawed out the top of our wedding cake and much to our surprise, it was still moist and tasty. I forgot to bring my main point and shoot camera, though, so I could only take photos with my iPhone this time around. I love snapping pics with my iPhone, except that when…
