What is Bite Size Memoir?

Bite Size Memoir is a new writing project created by Lisa Reiter. Here’s how she describes it:

Bite size memoir is designed to help anyone record some personal memoir in small manageable bites. There’s a prompt every week and some constraints to keep it small… Feel free to dip in and out each week without commitment.

Participants are given a prompt each week, then asked to respond with either a 150 word prose/poem, or 10 statements starting with “I remember” that are triggered by the prompt. I chose the prose route this week.

While Lisa’s memoir blog hop idea grabbed me right away, this is the first week I’ve joined in. Considering that I dressed up as a purple fairy last weekend, how could I sit back an ignore this week’s prompt: “Fairies and Magic”?

If you would like to play along, check out Lisa’s blog Bite Size Memoir Writing Prompt. If you’re on Twitter, you can find other people’s posts for this week via the hashtag #bitesizememoir, and be sure to follow @Lisa_Reiter, too.

Bite Size Memoir: Fairies and magic…

I had no need for fairy tale endings. I was a happy bachelorette. I only wanted to be a good aunt to my young nephews, and live simply, alone. All my belongings fit into 15 boxes I could easily carry. My life was full.

Knowing this, you courted me anyway, willing to risk a broken heart. You sent a steady stream of gifts: George Takei’s memoir, chocolates, movies, a subscription to Science News – even a handmade kaleidoscope (with a hidden love note inside!)

I tried dissuading you, listing my faults in great detail. Meanwhile, your hairdresser gave you a special haircut to make me fall in love. I thought it too short and you don’t believe in magic, but something happened anyway. We tied the knot – literally – at a Renaissance fair, with you dressed as a prince and me, a purple fairy.

And we live happily ever after!

What memories does the prompt “fairies and magic” bring up for you?

  1. That’s a wonderful story, Tui, and I love your fairy costume. It’s funny how often love comes along just when you decide you’re perfectly happy being on your own.

Hi Holli! Oh, yeah. It was nearly annoying, actually. I really did NOT want a man in my life when Larry showed up. Looking back, though, it was a fun problem to have. :D

  2. Oh Tui! This is the stuff that dreams are made of. What a beautiful, beautiful, romantic piece. Thank you for sharing it amidst such a generous introduction. I shall forever imagine I can manage to sprinkle a little cyber fairy dust in declaring you ‘shall live happily ever after’. Love to the Prince and the Purple Fairy, Lisa xxx

      • Something altogether more concrete – I’m afraid you might be disappointed?!
This prompt was so meant for you wasn’t it! I’ve had two friends on the phone this morning really moved by your piece. Thanks again, Lxx

          Hi Lisa,

I was definitely prompted by your prompt. It promptly did its job!
