Sculpture of the 1897 UFO Crash in Aurora, Texas

Space alien buried in Aurora, Texas cemetery?

Yesterday, I blogged about a very strange incident: the 1897 UFO crash in Aurora, Texas.  According to a newspaper article published by the Dallas News in April of 1897, a cigar-shaped object crashed in a farmer’s field, an alien body was found in the debris, and this little humanoid was buried in the local cemetery. (For a detailed account of this incident, along with a photo of the space alien’s headstone, visit: New Headstone for Aurora, Texas UFO Crash Space Alien Grave.

New Aurora, Texas UFO Sculpture

So today, I want to share something my husband, Larry, and I saw on our way home from visiting the space alien gravesite at the Aurora Cemetery. For over a year now, I’ve heard rumors that the City of Aurora, Texas is planning a sculpture commemorating the 1897 UFO crash there. From what I’d been told, the artwork will feature a windmill, a spaceship and a little alien body.
As you can see from the photos on this page, it looks like work is now underway! This will be a fun and very unique site for travelers in north Texas.

Aurora: a Legendary Texas Town

When I first heard about this intriguing bit of Texas UFO lore, I was told that the City of Aurora was not interested in discussing it. I was disappointed, but not surprised to hear this. As a travel writer, I have noticed that local residents and historians often distance themselves from the very things that others find most fascinating about their hometown.
I was really excited, however, when the City of Aurora had a change of heart and decided to embrace this unique local UFO legend. I mean, just take a quick look at: the City of Aurora’s UFO themed website.
Pretty cool, eh? I love the snappy town tagline now, too: “Aurora, a legendary Texas town.”

Annual UFO Expo: Aurora Alien Encounter

To top it off, the City of Aurora, Texas now hosts an annual UFO expo called the Aurora Alien Encounter. This expo commemorates the mysterious incident from April 17, 1897. Last year’s expo was a blast!

I am currently writing a book about the public’s reaction to the Great Texas Airship Sightings of 1897. If you’d like to see some of the research I dug up on the subject, check out the presentation I gave at last year’s Aurora Alien Encounter in the video below:
