First ever photography exhibit!
I’m having a month-long photography show in conjunction with my writing residency for the Langdon Review. Although my photos have been published in various places (including this poetry book) over the years, this is my first-ever, print-them-out-and-hang-them-on-the-wall photography exhibit. Not only am I super excited, but this show really means a lot to me; however, I’ll get into that in another post!

iPhone Photography
Choosing a theme for this show was tough, but there is one thing all my photos have in common: I took them with an iPhone! Some in my show were taken with an iPhone 5 and others with an iPhone 6. I used to sneer at the idea of taking photos with a cell phone, but after getting my first iPhone and timidly starting an Instagram account, I quickly changed my mind. I could say a lot more about this, but I’ll save that for another post, as well!
Choosing which photos to hang
The next challenge was choosing which photos to print out and hang on the wall of the Dora Lee Langdon Center over in Granbury, Texas! After much agonizing and scrolling through folders, I settled on three different photography themes. (I also realized that I truly need a better system for organizing my photos. What a mess!)
Travels: through Texas – and Beyond!
Since the first photos I ever had published in a magazine accompanied travel articles I’d written, this seemed like an obvious topic to explore. I love showcasing offbeat and overlooked travel destinations. In fact, I nearly made travel the only theme for the show. Somehow, though, that just didn’t feel right…
Texture, Shadow and Reflection
Some of my favorite photos are less literal than the kind I use in travel articles. My eye is often captivated by textures, shadows and reflections, and I love when I can translate what I see into a photo. It takes a certain amount of mindfulness to catch these shots which, to me, often feel like little poems.
Historic Graveyard Angels
As a writer, my research often takes me to historic graveyards, and I am fascinated by the forgotten meanings behind the many symbols to be found there. I am currently writing a book that will be a field guide to the meaning of historic cemetery symbols, and my research for this project has taken me all over the world.
These photos showcase a few of the many beautiful angels I have seen along the way! (My angel photos will also be featured in an upcoming book, entitled Shades of Angels: Angels of Light, Darkness & Us in Between.)
Notecard Sets & Calendars for each Photo Theme
In addition to the photos hanging on the wall, I will have photo card sets and calendars for sale. There are 10 different photos in the photo card sets. And, of course, there are 12 different photos in the calendars. There is a photo card set for each theme (Angels, Textures & Travel) and a calendar for each theme (Angels, Textures & Travel), as well. The photos in this post are representative of the 3 different themes, however my show will include some photos not shown here, as well.
Hanging the photos
I won’t be hanging the show until Friday, but I can hardly wait! Once I do, I will share photos of how it turned out! Anyway, what do you think? If you have any questions or ideas, please let me know in a comment below. :)
