What does a Lily symbolize when it’s carved on a headstone?

You’ve probably heard folks refer to someone as having a “lily white reputation,” right? Lilies are not only white, but they symbolize purity. That’s why being “lily white” means you are as clean and chaste as they come. In the context of a headstone, lilies may also refer to the soul’s return to a state of purity and innocence in the after life.

Field Guide to Cemetery Symbolism:

I am currently writing a field guide to historic cemetery symbolism. Each Tuesday, I share a small snippet from my upcoming book. It’s my goal to create a handy-dandy pocket guide for taphophiles, genealogists, ghost hunters, and anyone else interested in the historic graveyard symbols that have become forgotten over the years.

Which symbols are you curious about?

Let me know in the comments if there is a certain symbol that you are curious about. Also, if you would like to know when the cemetery symbolism guide is available for purchase, scroll down and sign up for my newsletter! I look forward to hearing from you!

  1. I love flower symbolism, Tui, so this post was right up my alley. I never thought about their symbolism as related to cemeteries, though. Looking forward to reading more!

How did I miss this comment until now, Denise? *scratches head* Anyway – there is actually quite a bit more to lilies than I even delved into here! I’m so glad you are enjoying these posts. :)
