Better than sitting at home
Last Sunday, DFW.com, the Modern Art Museum and Lone Star Film Society hosted their 5th annual Oscar Watching Party at the Modern in Fort Worth, Texas. (While I missed last year’s event, I blogged about the 3rd annual shindig here.)
Walk the Red Carpet
While I’ve rarely sat through an entire Oscar awards show on TV, I love attending this yearly party. For one thing, it’s free! For another, everyone gets to walk the red carpet when they arrive. They interview you, snap your photo and ask you questions such as who you think will win Best Actor, and what designer you are wearing. (As to the latter query, I’ve gone with Thrift Town both years.)
Popcorn and more
The Modern offers an open bar and snacks for purchase, as well as free popcorn – which is just the perfect thing to smell when you’re discussing movies.
Come As You Aren’t
Most people dress up. Some simply don fancy duds, while others take it a step further and come as their favorite movie character. This year, I spotted several Abe Lincoln/Mary Todd duos, a few guys in garbage bags (a la Silver Linings Playbook) and a trio of Bond Girls. Other outfits included an airline pilot whose jacket was loaded with mini-liquor bottles, the character Hush Puppy (from Beasts of the Southern Wild), and a woman in a hot dog suit (I’m not sure what that referred to, but she and her daughter were very cute.)
Free Flipbooks Steal the Show
One of the most entertaining things about this year’s party was the free flip books handed out courtesy of I Love Flipbooks. All you had to do was ham it up for seven seconds in front of the camera, and a couple minutes later, they would hand you two flipbooks of your antics. Those flipbooks were a hit and made a cute memento for the evening.
Such a Friendly Crowd
Another thing I love about this annual Oscar watching party is that it is just that – a party! Sure, you can sit in the auditorium and not miss a thing, but if you find your attention wandering, you can walk out into the other section to mix and mingle. They even give away prizes during commercials. What’s not to like? I’m already looking forward to next year!
