Unicorns of New Braunfels, Texas
In 1928, the high school of New Braunfels, Texas chose the unicorn to be its mascot. They did so in honor of the unicorn featured on the family crest of Friedrich Wilhelm Karl Ludwig Georg Alfred Alexander, Prince of Solms, Lord of Braunfels, Grafenstein, Münzenberg, Wildenfels, and Sonnenwalde… or simply, Prince Solms, for short.
Prince Solms is the man who founded the town as a German colony back in 1844. What the townsfolk didn’t realize is that Prince Solm’s family crest actually features a lion, but what the hey?
For those on a first-name basis with the New Braunfels unicorn, he goes by Eugene and the motto for the sports teams who claim him is: Unicorn Pride is Justified. There is even a 14 minute documentary about the New Braunfels unicorn. Click this link to see the: Unicorn Pride documentary preview

I went to Comfort Elementary, not far from New Braunfels. I was always so jealous of their unicorn mascot. How much would that rock????
Zombie season? Who knew? Think it’s time to take cover!
Hi Barbara,
I’m not sure how long Zombie season runs for and whether it refers to the hunting of Zombies, or their hunting of us. Guess I need to run out and buy a new Farmers Almanac!

I don’t think my cat will oblige :) Nice to meet you, Tui.
Hi Belinda,
Hehe, yeah! I can only think of one cat I’ve ever met that would have put up with a crazy inflatable unicorn horn on his head. He was one mellow feline!

New Braunfels is right up the road from me. So is Solms Road.
Hi Carol,
Ah, but did you know Prince Solms full name? What a mouthful!
I have not yet visited New Braunfels, but it’s on my Texas travel to-do list!

Somehow I don’t think cats would like people sticking an inflatable unicorn horn on their head.
Hi Patricia,
Really? ‘Cuz the cat in that photo looks *so* happy!(Cracks me up that even for the ad they couldn’t get the cat to look pleased.)

Unicorn parking should always be free! I had no idea that Zombie season was nearing.
Hi Julie,
If I ever run for office, free Unicorn parking will definitely be part of my platform!

LOL – is that sign for real, or did kids change it?
Hi Rhonda,
It’s a real sign! From what I hear, the folks who own that shop are quite playful.
