Texas Graveyards: Smoke Rise Farm Pet Cemetery in Azle

Texas is full of historic graveyards and I love exploring them. I rarely visit modern cemeteries, unless there is someone famous buried there or a particularly unique headstone to check out. For the most part, newer graveyards lack the history, the beautiful old trees, and the finely crafted headstones and monuments of the older ones. Yesterday, however, I checked out a graveyard that has only been around since 1982. What made me curious about Smoke Rise Farm (11330 Mountain View Drive, Azle, Texas 76020) is that it’s a pet cemetery. I’d never seen an official animal graveyard before, so I…

Meet the Beetle & My Row80 Check In

Meet the Beetle A couple days ago, a large beetle wandered into the boat shop where I work here in Texas. One of the mechanics caught it and – knowing that I’m enamored with critters – brought it into the office. A little Googling later, we determined it to be a type of rhinocerous beetle called the Eastern Hercules Beetle, or Dynastes Tityus if you want to be more formal. The Hercules reference is due to the fact that rhino beetles are the strongest creatures on earth – relatively speaking. These little guys can lift up to 850 times their…

Review: Green Day’s American Idiot Musical in Dallas

The first national tour of American Idiot a Broadway musical based on Green Day‘s 2004 album of the same name is currently playing in Dallas, Texas at the AT&T Performing Arts Center. I wasn’t sure how well Green Day’s music would translate to musical theater. After attending the opening night performance, I’m calling American Idiot a fine example of musical theater’s continuing evolution. Inspired by the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and The Who’s rock opera, “Tommy,” Green Day band members, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, intended for the Grammy award-winning album, American Idiot, to become a theatrical…

Kensal Green: a Historic Victorian Graveyard in London

Earlier this week, I wrote an article called Visiting Kensal Green Cemetery in London for The Traveler’s Way. As often happens, researching an article renews my interest in the site, and makes me want to visit again! I always end up learning way more information than the article’s word count can fit, and when using my own photos, I wind up with extras that I wish I could have shared. This time around, I figured, “Hey, why not post a few of those extra photos on my blog?” So here you go, gentle reader. The Magnificent Seven Kensal Green Cemetery…
