N is for New Orleans Street Scenes

People Watching in New Orleans Re-visiting my travel photos to choose ones for this post made me realize how rarely I focus on strangers when taking pictures. I do this partly out of respect for other people’s privacy, and partly because they aren’t that interesting or unique to the place I’m documenting. New Orleans, however, is different! I’m comfortable taking photos of people in NOLA in the same way I’m comfortable taking photos of guests at a lively party. It feels natural and not invasive. Perhaps this is because I never feel like a stranger in New Orleans, but more…

OctPoWriMo – 3 Road Trip Haiku

What is OctPoWriMo? My pals, Morgan Dragonwillow & Julie Jordan Scot joined forces to create a month-long poetry mix and mingle called OctPoWriMo. Full details can be found here: OctPoWriMo. You can also follow the #OctPoWriMo hashtag on Twitter. Feel free to join in! I don’t consider myself much of a poet. I’m more of a lyricist. For some reason, it’s easier for me to wax poetic when I’ve got a melody to work with. Even so, I’ve been playing around with haiku this month. Here are three I wrote over the weekend as my husband and I drove to…

Traveler’s Show & Tell: From Favelas to Faceburger

Welcome to the January 21, 2012 edition of Traveler’s Show and Tell. This week’s Traveler’s Show and Tell blog carnival features thirteen travelers. Read on to find out: … why folks in New Orleans drink coffee with chicory root added to it. … how to make the most of a trip to Jamaica. …why the Amalfi coast is worth visiting – again and again. … what life is really like in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. … and much, much more! This Week’s Travel Photo This burger joint’s blatant ripoff of the Facebook logo gave me a double take…

New Orleans’ Cafe du Monde: A Taste of History

New Orleans’ Cafe du Monde: A Taste of History When you enjoy a cup of chicory-laced coffee and a plate of beignets at New Orleans’ famous Cafe du Monde (800 Decatur St, New Orleans), you’re ingesting a bit of history along with your sugar and caffeine. Coffee played a big role in New Orleans’ history, and at one point in the 1800’s there were nearly 500 coffeehouses in the French Quarter. Cafe du Monde is the sole survivor from that era, with a menu that is virtually unchanged since it first opened in 1862. Why do they put chicory in…

NYC, London & New Orleans – Here I come!

Gone Traveling Thought I’d better let folks know that I’m off doing what travel writers love best: traveling! Over the next several weeks, the hubby and I will be hitting up NYC, Long Island, London, Barcelona, Cartagena, Cadiz, Ponta Delgada and New Orleans. Plus, we’re taking the slow way home – a transatlantic cruise. Internet access on cruises is the worst of all worlds: it’s not just slow, it’s pricey. As a result, my ability to respond to blog comments and emails is going to be pretty iffy until our return, November 15th. However, not only do we have a…
