Buying Drugs in Mexico

The other day, my fiance asked how my parents were doing and I replied, “They’re heading across the border to buy drugs.” No sooner did I say that than we both cracked up. What I said is true, but it paints the wrong picture. It’s not like my folks were off to mix and mingle with Mexican drug lords. They, like many other law-abiding US citizens, visit the border town of Algodones, Mexico to purchase prescription drugs at reasonable prices. From what I’ve read, Algodones is to medical needs what Las Vegas is to gamblers. The place is chock full…

3 signs of Autumn in North Texas

Contest at She Who Blogs Today, while visiting Michelle’s blog, Bleeding Espresso, I found out about the She Who Blogs: Three Signs of Fall Contest. Here’s the deal: Post a photo that says ‘fall’ to you, then blog about the 3 signs of autumn in your part of the world. The deadline is today, alas, so I am barely squeaking by. Better late than never, eh? 3 signs of Autumn in North Texas Autumn equinox came and went in north Texas, but it still felt like summer despite what the calendar said. Fall didn’t arrive until Texas was good and…

Easy in Texas: Frying an Egg on the Sidewalk

OK, so it would not be easy to fry an egg on the sidewalk today, but it sure was easy during the summer here in Texas. And no, we didn’t fry the eggs directly on the pavement – we wanted to eat them, after all! Did you know that a pan only has to be 150 degrees Fahrenheit to cook an egg? When it is 100+ degrees outside, you don’t have to try very hard to get that egg sizzling. We actually fried eggs in two different ways, as you can see from the photos. My fiance cooked his egg…

Chuck Norris and a Morphed Sense of Home

For years now, I have floundered when people ask, “Where are you from?” I just don’t feel like I am from any one particular place. I suppose that is because I have moved so much – 16 times in the last 10 years, in case you want me to define “a lot.” So when people say, “Where are you from?” I am not sure quite what they are really asking. Do they want to know where I was born? My nationality? Where I graduated high school? Nowadays, I tell people I am from Seattle, even though that’s not accurate. It’s…

What exactly is your culture?

New kids on the blog: A fun part of NaBloPoMo is making a daily cruise of the NaBloPoMo November blog roll to find new web sites to read.  One interesting blog I found this year is called In An Opal-Hearted Country and is written by an American expat living in Australia who signs her posts, “C. in Oz.” In her recent entry, Mr. Ed and Other Things I Learned From the Melbourne Cup, C. discusses how living in another country has made her think about the concept of culture. After hearing Christian Lander from Stuff White People Like speak, C.…
