Book Spine Poetry & a Birthday Surprise

What is Book Spine Poetry? Book spine poems are created by stacking books, then reading their titles as though each were a line of verse. This poetic form is known as a cento. What is a cento? According to Wikipedia: A cento is a poetical work wholly composed of verses or passages taken from other authors; only disposed in a new form or order. My Book Spine Poem It took a few months of inspiration ping pong between me and Nicole Rivera (@riverand) before I finally got around to stacking some books and snapping a photo. I don’t know why…

My Music: What Genre is this Song?

Can you help me out? When people ask what kind of music I record, I flounder. I want to describe it accurately, but I don’t know how! Sure, I grew up playing classical piano. As a clarinetist, I’ve played jazz, too. I’ve been known to dink around on the guitar and flute, but when it comes to writing and recording my own songs… I never know what to call the result! What genre is this song? I realize that musical tastes vary greatly, but if you could please listen to my song “Undertow,” then leave a comment telling me what…

My Big Re-Discovery: Pleasure Reading!

Not all reading is the same If you’re like me, you spend a lot of your day reading. But how much of that time do you spend on pleasure reading versus task-oriented reading? When I was a kid, the majority of my reading time was pleasure reading. Now, however, the majority of my reading time is task-oriented. Seems like I’m always troubleshooting programs or hunting down specific information rather than kicking back with a great story, or leisurely reading other people’s blogs. Don’t get me wrong; task-oriented reading can be a lot of fun. I especially enjoy researching travel articles…

ROW80 & WANACon Online Writing Conference

What’s WANACON you say? Perhaps you’re wondering: First ROW80, now WANACON; what’s with all the weird acronyms on this chick’s blog? What can I say? *shrug* I just keep bumping into interesting writing-related things that – like me – have quirky names! The latest one is WANACon, which is short for the WANA Worldwide Writing Conference. Frankly, I don’t know too much about the WANA gang, except that it’s the brainchild of Kristen Lamb and stands for, “we are not alone.” Like so many other things that flash across my screen, I mentally dog-eared WANA as something to investigate… some…

2013 Oscar Watching Party at The Modern in Fort Worth, Texas

Better than sitting at home Last Sunday, DFW.com, the Modern Art Museum and Lone Star Film Society hosted their 5th annual Oscar Watching Party at the Modern in Fort Worth, Texas. (While I missed last year’s event, I blogged about the 3rd annual shindig here.) Walk the Red Carpet While I’ve rarely sat through an entire Oscar awards show on TV, I love attending this yearly party. For one thing, it’s free! For another, everyone gets to walk the red carpet when they arrive. They interview you, snap your photo and ask you questions such as who you think will…

Review: Anything Goes at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas, Texas

Anything Goes: A Tony Award Winning Musical Revival Anything Goes is not just a classic musical, it’s what every musical strives to be. Whether you’ve seen it before or not, if you grew up in the USA, you’ve certainly heard all (or very nearly all) of the songs in this show before. The first act alone contains such classics as: “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top,” “De-Lovely,” and, “Anything Goes.” See what I mean? After seeing the show in Dallas at the Winspear Opera House, it’s easy to see why this revival by New York City’s…
