Why Read Paranormal Texas?

by Leave a Comment

Why read Paranormal Texas?

Sure, there are other books about real haunted places in Texas – I should know, my bookshelves are crowded with them! So, what makes Paranormal Texas different?

Overlooked Haunted Places
First off, Paranormal Texas includes a bunch of haunted places in Texas that are not in most other books. As with my first book, Unexpected Texas, I went out of my way (often, literally!) to find quirky, offbeat and overlooked sites.

For instance, I haven’t seen Moxley Manor (a haunted attraction that may truly be haunted) mentioned in any other books about real haunted places in Texas.

Of course, I didn’t turn my back on the most well-known paranormal hot spots and famous ghost stories of north Texas, either. So don’t worry; those spooky places also well-represented in Paranormal Texas.

Haunted Places You Can Actually Visit
Secondly, since Paranormal Texas is a travel guide, I want folks planning road trips near Dallas and Fort Worth to use the book to add haunted places to their itinerary if desired.

I don’t know about you, but I’m always disappointed to read about, say, a haunted BBQ joint only to find out that the place no longer exists. Simply knowing that a haunted site is open to the public makes a story more interesting to me, even if I never get to visit in person.

Sheer Entertainment
That said, Paranormal Texas has plenty to offer armchair travelers! For instance, readers will learn the truth behind Crystal Canyon’s buried treasure, as well as the surprisingly upbeat history of Arlington’s lost cemetery of infants.

#UnexTex is reviewed on Less Beaten Paths today

Welcome to Day 6 of the #UnexTex Unexpected Texas Book Release Blog Tour for my quirky travel guide Unexpected Texas. My book is now on sale as a paperback and eBook on Amazon. I’m also thrilled to report that on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 my book reached #1 on the Amazon Bestsellers list for Dallas – Fort Worth Travel books!

Today, Unexpected Texas is featured on David Sumoflam Kravetz’s Less Beaten Paths blog, Sumoflam’s Story Shots Tumblr, and also Sumoflam’s Singlewide blog. I met David through Twitter, and immediately realized that he is a kindred spirit. We both love exploring offbeat and overlooked places, and are especially fond of the quirky and humorous.

David is a prolific blogger and photographer who has lived and worked all over the world, including China and Japan. He even speaks Japanese fluently and worked as a translator.

I swear, too, that David has been just about everywhere. So it was a big surprise to learn that he had not seen or heard of a few (only a few, mind you!) of the places I mention in Unexpected Texas, such as the gas station/speakeasy made of petrified wood in Glen Rose and the petrified wood motel and cafe in Decatur.

Day 6 #UnexTex Prizes

Because David and I both love road trips so much, I used that as inspiration for the prize giveaway at his stop on the #UnexTex book release blog tour. One lucky winner will receive: a paperback of Unexpected Texas, an Unexpected Texas notebook, and some really cute road trip stickers for scrapbooking.

2 Ways to Win Today’s #UnexTex Prizes

You can win the items mentioned above by entering the Rafflecopter below. Afterwards, you can enter *again* over at David’s Less Beaten Paths website. Prize winners will be chosen on March 11, 2014. If you use Twitter, you can even re-enter this giveaway daily!

Unexpected Texas Gets Reviewed by a Native Texan (spoiler alert: She loves it!)

#UnexTex is featured on This Eclectic Life today

Welcome to Day 5 of the #UnexTex Unexpected Texas Book Release Blog Tour for my quirky travel guide Unexpected Texas. It’s now on sale as a paperback and ebook on Amazon. Yippee!

Today, my book is featured on Shelly Tucker’s blog, This Eclectic Life. Not only is Shelly a bona fide native Texan, but a few years ago the National Endownment for the Arts (NEA) named her an “American Masterpiece.” Pretty cool, eh?

Of all the bloggers on the #UnexTex Unexpected Texas Book Release Blog Tour, Shelly is the only one I have met in person. Another distinction for Shelly is that she features prominently in my chapter about the town of Denton. Around those parts, Shelly is known as “the ghost lady.” You can read all about it in this excerpt from Unexpected Texas: The Ghosts of Denton, Texas: Haunted History Tour.

Day 5 #UnexTex Prizes

I didn’t find anything particularly ghostly for today’s prize pack, so I went for the Texas angle. As I mentioned before, Shelly is a native Texan. Today’s prizes include the latest issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife. This ties in with the Athens, Texas chapter of Unexpected Texas in which I describe a visit to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. Not only do they have aquariums and a well-stocked pond, but they will loan you a rod and reel and teach you how to fish.

2 Ways to Win Today’s #UnexTex Prizes

You can win the items mentioned above by entering the Rafflecopter below. Afterwards, you can enter *again* over at This Eclectic Life. Prize winners will be chosen on March 11, 2014. If you use Twitter, you can even re-enter this giveaway daily!

Nicole’s interview explains what my book Unexpected Texas is all about, as well as some interesting background information. You can read it here: StoryDam Author Interview: Tui Snider and her Unexpected Texas Book Release Blog Tour
