Saturday Show & Tell – 6th Edition

Now that the Blog Carnival site has recovered, I received a bunch of interesting submissions for Saturday Show & Tell. The first one, as you can see at the top of this post, is a photo from Paula Puffer. As she explains: “It was taken a couple weeks ago at Armand Bayou Nature Center here in Texas. I love the contrast of the colors and the newness of the leaves on the tree. Spring has definitely sprung!” To see more of her photography, writing and other projects, check out Paula Puffer and her blog, Don’t Be a Pickle Bump. While…

My Close Encounter with Roswell New Mexico

OK, so it was actually more of a roadtrip through Roswell than a roadtrip to Roswell, New Mexico, but I am glad we stopped by because I made two startling discoveries: The singer John Denver hails from Roswell, New Mexico. (Gasp! Perhaps his ultralight aircraft was reverse engineered?) New Mexican style Mexican food is quite different than the Tex Mex we get here in the Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex. I didn’t see any UFOS in the sky, but I spotted shop windows and signs all over town featuring aliens galore: TO SEE MORE PHOTOS and READ THE REST, CLICK…

Saturday Show & Tell – International Women’s Day

Welcome to Saturday Show & Tell This week’s blog carnival has International Womens Day for a theme, since March 8th, 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of that celebration. Today’s roundup features 9 different bloggers, and offers a variety of perspectives on the female experience, with topics ranging from guilt-ridden Spring cleaning to guilt-free masturbation. Cherrye Moore kicks off this edition with a post entitled Happy International Womens Day. Cherrye is an American expat living in Italy, and her post explains how this holiday is celebrated in Italy. Katie Greenaway also muses about International Womens Day, Italian style, in a post…

2 Ways To Brew Coffee While Traveling

Perhaps it’s because all 3 of us have roots in Washington State, the birthplace of Starbucks, but fellow bloggers, MJ and Jessica have both written about the difficulty of finding a tasty cup of coffee while traveling. MJ found a handheld espresso maker called the Handspresso that looks really good. At $100 it seems pricey, but a true coffee junkie would recoup that after a month or two. It would definitely make a great gift for espresso fans who travel a lot. (Heck, it would make a great gift for me.) All you need with the Handspresso are coffee pods…

Backyard Travel: Nguyen Loi Oriental Supermarket

When you are in Texas, it’s pretty hard to forget that you are in Texas. Everywhere you look there are businesses with “Lone Star” in their name, Texas flags proudly flying, and fancy pick-up trucks with bumper stickers proclaiming great things about the state. One of my favorite things about Texas, in fact, is its strong sense of identity. Texas is like a loud-mouthed, opinionated friend you don’t always agree with, but you love to hang out with, anyway. A couple days ago, however, it felt like I stepped out of Texas and into another country. My fiance and I…

Recycled Books in Denton, Texas – Gotta love the view!

A few weeks ago, my fiance and I hopped in the car for a spontaneous, let’s-just-get-out-of-the-house kind of trip. We had no particular agenda, but north seemed a good direction, which is how we wound up in Denton, Texas on a chilly Sunday afternoon. The first thing we discovered about Denton is that Sundays are the worst day of the week to visit. Nearly all the shops and museums were closed. Luckily, there was a fabulous used bookstore open, a place called Recycled Books. I love any bookstore, but funky, used bookstores are my favorites. The moment I stepped inside…
