Review: In The Heights, a Tony Award Winning Musical
 in Dallas

The Tony Award-winning musical “In the Heights,” opened last night in Dallas as part of the AT&T Performing Arts Center’s Lexus Broadway Series. This production received 13 Tony Award nominations and won four: Best Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Original Score and Best Choreography, so I was excited to check it out. I was not disappointed! For one thing, the pre-show last night was fun and festive. As the audience wandered in, volunteers from Z.O.A.S. Creative & Healing Arts painted a mural in front of the Winspear Opera House, while children and adults frolicked and posed for photos in the nearby…

Tips for Visiting the Dallas Arboretum

Quinceaneras Bloom at the Dallas Arboretum A couple of weeks ago, I finally visited the Dallas Arboretum for the first time. What a fabulous place! On the day I went, the park was full of people, including several young ladies decked out in Quinceañera dresses. If, like me, you are new to Texas, you may not have seen these 15-year-old Hispanic debutantes before. With their tiaras and evening gowns, it’s easy to mistake them for young brides. It was a gorgeous spring-like day in January, and I snapped a ton of photos, sharing some of them on Twitter via my…

Kalachandji’s Restaurant and Palace in Dallas, Texas: Good Food which just happens to be Vegetarian

Kalachandji’s Restaurant and Palace in Dallas, Texas is located in a Hare Krishna temple, but don’t let that scare you off. No one is out to push their religious beliefs on you. Every time I have eaten there, the wait staff is so pleasant and courteous that I’m tempted to find more places of worship to dine at! Plus, I love dining in their garden courtyard with its stained glass windows and a gorgeous tree in the center.

Whatever floats your boat

I adore the bird paddle boats at Fair Park in Dallas. They have both swans and mallards, but the swans are best – a delightful blend of elegance and playfulness. My boyfriend runs a boat shop, and once built a beautiful mahogany boat. If I built a boat, I’d create the ultimate swan paddle boat. Mine would have fold-out wings to shade you from the relentless Texan sun. If it came down to it, my boyfriend would be happy to help me with such a silly project. He once said, “We don’t have to do anything normal if we don’t want…

Shark-gazing at the Dallas World Aquarium

Don’t let the name fool you, the Dallas World Aquarium is more than just a fun place to see exotic fish. Even the nondescript exterior of this former warehouse belies the lush interior inside. The show begins even before you have bought a ticket; as you wind your way along the side to enter, there is a “Wilds of Borneo” display featuring animals from Indonesia. You then enter at the canopy level of a humid rainforest environment called the “Orinoco – Secrets of the River” display. Walkways let you meander through the treetops, where several bird species fly through the…
