Saturday Show & Tell – Texas Wildflowers

This week’s Saturday Show & Tell rounds up 4 posts, all from bloggers here in Texas. (Notice that I didn’t call us, “Texan bloggers,” I don’t think I have lived here long enough to qualify as a Texan yet!) Paula Puffer came up with this week’s timely theme: “Here’s something fun for this week’s carnival. Since it’s springtime in Texas, I thought wildflowers would be a good topic.” Oh, Paula, of course! Texas springtime and wildflowers go hand in hand. As I mentioned in, Wildflower Viewing: A Texan Tradition : “…it’s a rare Texan who does not know that the…

Impatient Virgin: Pulp Fiction as My Guilty Pleasure

Guilty Reading Pleasures Are there books you enjoy, but would be embarrassed to admit you read? NPR has an ongoing segment called My Guilty Pleasure in which authors confess to books they adore, but would not wish to be caught reading in public. Pulp fiction novels from the 50’s and 60’s are my guilty reading pleasure. The more salacious the cover, the cheesier the premise, the better. There, I’ve admitted it. Before you judge me too harshly, however, I can explain! Judging a Book by its Cover It all started when I worked at a used bookstore simply called The…

This Tip for Sending Postcards is So Simple it Nearly Sounds Stupid

Gadling recently posted an article about postcards, which states: “The fun thing about postcards is that they lack everything current technology gives us.” It’s 2011 and my life is full of digital wonders. All the more reason to send postcards, I say. Who doesn’t love to get something handwritten from a friend in their mailbox? I know I do. Trouble is, once you are on the road, it’s a pain to dig up addresses and remember all the people you promised to write. So here is something I do when traveling, something super simple, and yet – every time I…

Saturday Show & Tell – International Women’s Day

Welcome to Saturday Show & Tell This week’s blog carnival has International Womens Day for a theme, since March 8th, 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of that celebration. Today’s roundup features 9 different bloggers, and offers a variety of perspectives on the female experience, with topics ranging from guilt-ridden Spring cleaning to guilt-free masturbation. Cherrye Moore kicks off this edition with a post entitled Happy International Womens Day. Cherrye is an American expat living in Italy, and her post explains how this holiday is celebrated in Italy. Katie Greenaway also muses about International Womens Day, Italian style, in a post…

2011 Oscar Party in Fort Worth, Texas

The 2011 Oscar Awards Ceremony was broadly panned by critics and fans, and if I had stayed home to watch it, I might have found it lackluster, too. Instead, my boyfriend and I attended the free Oscar Party at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (or simply “The Modern,” as folks around here call it) and had a great time. First off, the people-watching was top notch. Not only were there snappy tuxedos and glittering gowns galore, but many people came in character. I spotted a gaggle of Black Swans, and several Alice in Wonderland characters, as well as…

2 Ways To Brew Coffee While Traveling

Perhaps it’s because all 3 of us have roots in Washington State, the birthplace of Starbucks, but fellow bloggers, MJ and Jessica have both written about the difficulty of finding a tasty cup of coffee while traveling. MJ found a handheld espresso maker called the Handspresso that looks really good. At $100 it seems pricey, but a true coffee junkie would recoup that after a month or two. It would definitely make a great gift for espresso fans who travel a lot. (Heck, it would make a great gift for me.) All you need with the Handspresso are coffee pods…
