O is for Observation #AtoZChallenge

I love encouraging others!

Since I love encouraging others so much, I’m sharing Creativity Memes for this year’s A to Z Blog Challenge. The quotes are from all over, but I took each photo with my iPhone. Here’s today’s featured letter:

O is for Observation

I’m always delighted when artists make clever observations through their creative projects. In fact, I’d say this is one of the hallmarks of good art, whether it’s a song, poem, story, movie, photograph, painting, sculpture, joke, et cetera.

As a viewer, I love the epiphany that comes from keen observation. It’s such a lovely surprise! This doesn’t have to be earth-shattering, either.  I’m merely referring to those passages in a novel, a poem or a song that make you think, “Oh, yeah! I’ve had this feeling,” or “I know someone like this.” It’s just satisfying when art points out something I’ve seen or felt, but have never quite put a name to or thought much about.

Good art is like a tap on the shoulder, it wakes you up to the world around you. And this, in turn, makes you more mindful and observant. Let creativity be your Immersion Suit!

What about you? Does good art ever make you you more mindful? Is your own urge to create fueled, at least in part, by a desire to experience life more fully? To be more awake to the world around you?

I’ve gone from turning up my nose at the idea of cell phone pictures, to being an avid iPhone photographer. I even had my first gallery show last summer!
