Christmas in the Desert
My family and I spent last Christmas in the desert. Needless to say, it was not a white Christmas, although the opening lines of that famous Irving Berlin song, did apply:
The sun is shining, the grass is green
The orange and palm trees sway
There’s never been such a day
In Beverly Hills, LA
But it’s December the 24th
And I’m longing to be up north
At least, they sort of applied. We were actually in Arizona, and I don’t think any of us were longing for snow or New York. It was tough to get me out of the swimming pool, in fact!
Cactus Wearing Santa Hats
Despite the lack of snow, there was not shortage of Christmas lights and decorations in sunny Arizona. I especially got a kick out of all the cacti wearing Santa hats. Turns out this whimsical attire also serves a practical purpose. According the gardening section of the Mesa, Arizona newspaper, topping your cactus with a hat protects it from Jack Frost. Nifty, eh? I like it when things are both cute and practical.
