Test Driving a Nissan Leaf Electric Car: 5 Things I Learned the Fun Way

In January, my fiance and I test drove a Nissan Leaf electric car over in Dallas. It was a gray, rainy day, but the dealership was packed with people eager to take one for a spin – not at all what I expected here in Texas, land of oversized pickup trucks. Full disclosure: I was a passenger on this jaunt, not a driver. Why? Because I hate driving. I can handle driving around a small town, but highways make me jittery. In other words, I am not a “car person,” in much the same way that some people are not…

Superstition Mountain Museum: Pure Arizona Nature Glam

Superstition Mountain Museum is a fun place to swing by if you happen to be in the neighborhood, and by neighborhood, I mean Arizona. The place offers clean restrooms, a gift shop, and an indoor museum, but my favorite thing to do there is wander along the site’s picturesque outdoor trail. The setting is pure Arizona nature-glam, making it ideal for posing group shots with Mount Superstition looming in the background and rugged desert cacti dotting the foreground. It’s also perfect for taking silly cactus pictures. You know the ones I mean: photos which make it look like you are…

Reverb 10: Falling back in touch with my wife-in-law

Today’s post was triggered by the following Reverb 10 prompt, which comes from Martha Mihalick December 16 – Friendship How has a friend changed you or your perspective on the world this year? Was this change gradual, or a sudden burst? I recently spent a couple hours talking to my wife-in-law on the phone. What’s a wife-in-law, you ask? Simply put, a wife-in-law is the person who at one time was married to the same guy you are, or were. She and I coined that term one day when trying to explain to someone how we are related. People are…

Don’t talk with your mouth full (makes it hard for me to eavesdrop)

‘Twas a long day, with a long drive to and fro. (In the post that got eaten yesterday, I explained that I was accompanying my boyfriend on a work trip up to Lake Texoma today.) As always, I kept my camera on my lap in case I saw anything interesting along the way, and, as always, I missed a few, such as the sign on a semi which read, “Caution: I make wide ass turns,” a church named, “Truth,” a Hulk Hogan doppelganger, and a business called, “The Shop,” which had the slogan, “What happens at The Shop stays at…

The Church by The Diner next to The Porch

Not surprisingly, I see a lot of churches here in Texas, but I found this one quite intriguing. Did you notice the barely legible ‘no trespassing’ sign on it? Inside there were folding chairs in rows, a lot of cardboard boxes, and a chainsaw sitting on a crate. It smelled like a garage. Across from the church was a little place called The Diner where we grabbed some fried chicken. We got it to go because the tiny place was packed. There were 7 men in total, and 5 of them were wearing cowboy hats as they ate. Guess it’s…

The Lord of Possum Kingdom

Tomorrow I’m heading to Possum Kingdom as Tex’s official helper. I’m not sure what this will entail. Maybe some painting, or just general gophering. In any case, it’s a road trip – yeah! No one seems to know how the place got its name. To me, Possum Kingdom conjures up a Beatrix Potter scenario with a regal possum wearing a crown and robe whilst sitting upon a throne made out of an old cedar stump. So that’s exactly what I’m expecting, talking possums who live like medieval kings and queens in quaint, yet lavish, oak forest castles. Tomorrow will also…
